About

The J L Smith Foundation’s mission is to support education about early lifeways, traditions, music, material culture, and history of folk of all walks of life in early America, concentrating on the geographical areas of the rural South. Working in partnership with other 501(c)3 organizations, we provide opportunities for historic preservation, teaching workshops, and retreats where educators and students can practice firsthand building science, textile craft, cooking, and historic research, improving skills that enhance the knowledge and understanding of the lives of early Americans.

We believe in the ability of human beings to solve problems related to their own experiences and to implement the fruits of their own labors. We support the rights of individuals to pursue their dreams, and to give back to the communities in which they live. We believe in learning about the experiences of those unlike ourselves. We believe that acceptance and recognition of the power of our individual, cultural, and ethnic diversity is the key to overcoming many of the problems that plague the world. Therefore, we advocate and support research and real-world projects for affordable housing, and exploring the linkages between traditional lifeways, creativity, and economic vitality in healthy communities.
